Los Angeles County supervisors are expected to vote Tuesday on a motion aimed at combating hate crime after several suspected incidents were reported following the Nov. 8 presidential election.
Supervisor Hilda Solis is proposing the county sheriff’s department “act swiftly to proactively contact communities likely to be targeted” and reassure them that the immigration status of victims or witnesses won’t be questioned, this to encourage the reporting of hate crimes.
Solis is also asking county officials and the sheriff’s department to report back in 60 days on what is being done to implement the recommendations of a county anti-hate crimes task force that was established earlier this year. The recommendations include setting protocols for quick information-sharing about hate crimes among government agencies and coordinating with police to “investigate, arrest, and ensure appropriate consequences” for those found to have perpetrated hate crimes.
