This week in hate highlights hate crimes and harassment around the country since the election of Donald Trump. The Southern Poverty Law Center and other groups are keeping detailed counts of these incidents as concerns increase about a rise in hate crimes. Here are some that have drawn public attention in recent days.

• A Jewish couple in Rockville, Md., received a note including a Star of David and the word “Jew” in German on Saturday, after they hung a Black Lives Matter banner outside their home. “Your lack of care and racism is very annoying and disgraceful and for this we would like to award you a gold star,” the note said. “Enjoy the mayhem.” Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

• Staff at Hebrew Union College, a Jewish seminary in Cincinnati, reported last Tuesday that a sign near the main entrance had been vandalized with a swastika. Staff members removed the swastika and police are investigating the incident.

• Four people have been charged with a hate crime, among other charges, in the beating in Chicago of a teenager with mental disabilities, which was broadcast on Facebook Live on January 3. The video shows one of the suspects shouting about Donald Trump and “white people.”
