Hate crimes in Chicago hit a five-year high in 2016 and this year are out pacing last year’s reports of bias incidents, according to Chicago Police Department data.

The 72 crimes that CPD categorized as hate crimes in 2016 — because they were believed to have been motivated by bias of some kind — represent a 20 percent increase over 2015. There were 60 such reports that year, data show.
