NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released two new reports Tuesday, outlining the volume and nature of hate crimes and reported crimes in schools across the state.
In the report “Tennessee Hate Crime 2015,” TBI says the number of victims of reported bias-motivated offenses increased 48.1 percent; males were victimized at a higher rate (57.1 percent) than females (42.9 percent); and the number of Damage/Destruction/Vandalism offenses indicated as being a hate crime increased 4.9 percent over the previous year.
However, in the second report, “School Crime 2013-2015,” TBI found that the overall number of offenses in Tennessee schools decreased by 15.6 percent, from 9,961 offenses in 2013, to 8,408 in 2015. Simple assault was the most frequently reported offense, making up 36.4 percent of the reports. Males were the reported offender in 63.6 percent of cases.
The studies use data from crime data submitted throughout the year to TBI by law enforcement agencies across Tennessee, through the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System.
