Dear Friends,
In the past week, on two separate occasions, GRID Alternatives staff and trainees were subjected to racially motivated physical and verbal abuse by neighborhood residents while working on one of our jobsites. Sadly, we know that they are not alone in these experiences, and that these experiences are not new for people of color, immigrants and other marginalized communities. We also know that we are not alone in saying that this is intolerable. Hate speech and acts of hate have no place on our jobsites, in our neighborhoods, or in our society.
GRID Alternatives is committed first and foremost to the emotional and physical safety of everyone who participates in our projects, and we work closely with our partners and our staff to create a safe environment and respond appropriately if issues arise. We are also resolute in standing up to acts of hatred we witness in the course of our work. If you witness or experience anything threatening while participating in our activities, please inform a GRID staff member immediately, or report it to your local GRID office. You can also report anonymously at gridalternatives.org/safety.
Equity and access are at the core of GRID’s mission, and we will continue to make GRID a place where people of all backgrounds can work side-by-side toward our shared goals with dignity and respect.
Thank you for your continued support and vigilance.
